Ramadan

The month of Ramadan is a great time to build self-discipline as well as helping the body get rid of toxins.

If you do have diabetes and are fasting then it is extremely important to watch what you eat in the morning and the evening.

A healthy way to open your fast would be with a bowl of porridge, slice of toast and a handful of nuts rather than a fattening paratha.

Make sure when you break your fast that you eat slowly, start with some dates or chickpeas. A good dinner to have would be boiled rice with chicken curry and fruit salad.

Reasons not to fast

The Quran makes it clear that if fasting will damage your health then it should be avoided in verse 184, chapter 2.  Fasting can be carried out at a later date if the patient's health improves or compensation can be paid such as providing meals for the homeless.
Those who are required to take insulin are advised not to fast.

The Quran reminds us to:

"Eat of the good and wholesome food that we have provided for your sustenance, but do not indulge in excess"
(20:89)
